What is hemp?

The cannabis family has two major lineages. On one side there is “marijuana” or “ganja” and the other is “hemp” or “industrial hemp”. The only difference is the quantity of THC, the molecule that is known for getting you ‘high’.

Why is it referred to as the ‘miracle crop’?

Hemp literally has hundreds of potential uses. Food, fibre, fuel, fabrics, furniture, medicine, building materials, paper and bioplastics can all be made from one plant – hemp!

While doing all this Hemp removes more CO2 from the air than trees do and is pest, weed and drought resistant. Unlike corn, cotton, soy, wheat and rice, hemp uses a lot less water, pesticides or herbicides. Hemp also yields food that is more nutritious than all these others combined.

What are the nutritional benefits of hemp?

Hemp seeds have been consumed as a staple food all over the world for thousands of years. They are considered the “perfect food”, making them a great staple to your diet.

Hemp seeds are an important dietary component because they contain an abundance of essential nutrients in the form of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids and full-spectrum protein. Hemp seeds are:

  • Balanced– on their own they provide much of what your body needs without over-supplying some nutrients while causing a deficiency in others.
  • Digestible– they don’t require cooking, soaking or crushing, your body can easily take what it needs and eliminate what it doesn’t.
  • Safe– unlike many foods we consume daily, Hemp seeds do not burden your body with toxins, allergens, GMO’s or undigested waste materials.
  • Sustainable– you don’t have to kill anything, poison the planet, exploit the ocean or risk anyone’s safety to obtain Hemp Seeds; they grow just about anywhere in the world, and that same crop that grows our hemp seeds may also be used to build your home, make bioplastics or be turned into the clothes you wear.

What is CBD and why should you care?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemicals found in the cannabis plant. CBD is the acronym used for cannabidiol, which is just one of the over 100 different cannabinoids found in cannabis.

Cannabinoids are also found naturally in the human body as part of the endocannabinoid system, where they act as messengers sending signals to the brain, gut or other parts to help regulate basic bodily functions.

CBD vs THC

So what’s the difference between CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)? While they are both naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and they both affect the body by communicating with the endocannabinoid system, they each play different roles. THC is the psychoactive chemical responsible for making you “high”, while CBD is non-psychoactive and is responsible for calmer, more relaxed feelings. So, in summary they have the same wellness benefits however CBD doesn’t cause the euphoric effects that occur with THC.

CBD supports overall wellness and promotes homeostasis, creating balance in the body. It is a powerful antioxidant, supports healthy immune function and can even support a positive, healthy mood. CBD is well tolerated, even in large doses, and was ruled by WHO as generally safe.

Why hemp-derived CBD?

CBD can be derived from hemp plants (cannabis plants that contain less than 0.3% THC) or marijuana plants (cannabis plants with higher concentration of THC).

All of our hemp extracts are made from industrial hemp grown in the United States. We carefully select and source the biomasse and ingredients that go into our products, and ensure the highest quality throughout the production process.

How is the CBD extracted?

CBD can be extracted from hemp using a number of methods. Elixinol uses a completely organic plant and extracts CBD and a full spectrum of other cannabinoids using a specialised CO2 extraction process. Other CBD suppliers may use chemical extraction which diminishes other essential cannabinoids, which we believe reduces the effectiveness of CBD.

Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum

A full-spectrum extract means it contains all phytochemicals naturally found in the plant. This means the full spectrum of active compounds can work together to enhance or amplify the benefits of individual cannabinoids.

Broad-spectrum CBD contains cannabidiol and the other compounds within the plant. However, the small amount of THC is removed after the extraction. Broad-spectrum products are a great option for those who cannot have any traces of THC in their system.
